Cindy Threlkeld, ED Literacy Together

Jim Brown has an amazing talent for converting a curriculum designed for in-person training to an online format that is comprehensive, interactive, and engaging. His extensive background in distance learning, plus his expertise in literacy and reading made him the perfect person to respond to our call for help when the pandemic hit last March.

Tutors at Literacy Together (formerly the Literacy Council of Buncombe County) work with low literacy adults to help them reach their personal goals – a high school diploma, a better job, or the ability to help their kids with their homework. We knew we had to immediately move our operations online, but as a small nonprofit, we lacked the skills and capacity to make it happen.

Jim stepped forward to guide us through the process of converting our tutor training to a distance-learning format. He worked with our team to develop the skills to implement the new curriculum, with lesson plans that would work even with students who may not have access to a computer or the internet. He is not only competent, but he is also patient, has high energy, and has a wonderful sense of humor that puts everyone at ease.

Our training is not only up and running, it receives rave reviews from our new volunteer tutors. We just signed a contract with Jim to put our Youth Literacy training online as well.
